Samburu vs Masai Mara is the choice many travelers face when they plan a Kenya safari, and the honest answer is that neither is better, they are just different. The Mara is the classic: open plains, big cats and the Great Migration. Samburu is the quieter alternative: a dry northern landscape, a winding river and rare species you will not see in the south. This guide compares them on wildlife, scenery, crowds, cost, travel time and timing, so you can pick the right one or decide to visit both.
If you are leaning toward the Mara, start with our Masai Mara safari page, and if the north appeals, read about Samburu. You can also browse our safari tour packages, and use our guide to the best time to visit Kenya for a safari to match your dates.

The biggest difference in Samburu vs Masai Mara is what you come to see. Samburu is home to the Samburu Special Five, a group of species mostly found in northern Kenya: Grevy’s zebra, the reticulated giraffe, the Somali ostrich, the Beisa oryx and the gerenuk, a gazelle that stands on its back legs to browse. Samburu also has large elephant herds along the river, plus lions and leopards, which are often seen in the riverside trees.
The Mara offers sheer volume. It has one of the highest densities of lions in Africa, regular cheetah sightings, and from around July to October the herds of the Great Migration arrive. Our guide to the Masai Mara Great Migration river crossings explains when and where to see them. If seeing all five of the classic Big Five matters, note that neither reserve is a reliable rhino destination, and our guide on the Big Five in Kenya shows how to add a rhino park.
Samburu feels like a different country. Red earth, acacia scrub and doum palms frame the Ewaso Nyiro river, where elephants drink and crocodiles bask on the banks. It is a place for quiet game drives and long river views. Visits to local Samburu villages add a cultural layer that many travelers enjoy.
The Mara is the postcard version of Africa: wide golden grassland, scattered acacia trees and huge skies. Game drives often feel dramatic, with predators hunting in the open and herds stretching to the horizon. If you want that classic Out of Africa scene, the Mara delivers it.
Samburu is usually much quieter, so you often have a sighting to yourself. The Mara is Kenya’s most visited reserve, and at famous spots like river crossings you may share the view with many vehicles in peak season. You can reduce this by staying in a private conservancy around the reserve, where vehicle numbers are limited and night drives and walking safaris are allowed. For more on privacy and romance, see our top honeymoon safari ideas in Kenya.
By road the Mara takes about five to six hours from Nairobi, and Samburu takes around six to seven. Both have airstrips, and scheduled bush flights from Wilson Airport save most of the drive, with carriers such as Safarilink operating light-aircraft routes in Kenya. For routes, times and prices to the Mara, read our guide to getting from Nairobi to Masai Mara. If you drive to Samburu, you pass through Laikipia, which makes a stop at Ol Pejeta easy to add. You can check current conservancy details on the official Ol Pejeta Conservancy website.
At a similar comfort level, Samburu usually costs less per night than the Mara. The main reasons are lower park fees and fewer luxury camps charging extra private-conservancy fees.

Both reserves offer morning and afternoon game drives, but each has its own extras.

If a sunrise balloon flight is on your wish list, read our guide to the Masai Mara hot air balloon safari before you book. Samburu rewards slower travel, so allow time for long river drives and a village visit rather than rushing through.
The most common mistake is trying to fit both reserves into a short trip. The drive between them is long, so a four-day itinerary should pick one. The second is choosing Samburu for the migration, which does not happen there. The third is assuming the Mara is always crowded, when a conservancy stay or a shoulder-season visit can feel remarkably private. Finally, travelers sometimes book Samburu in the short rains of November and wonder why the landscape is muddy, so check the season before you commit.

Yes, and many travelers do. Samburu and the Mara sit at opposite ends of the country, so combining them takes time, usually at least seven to nine days. A common route runs from Nairobi to Samburu, then to Ol Pejeta in Laikipia, then on to the Mara. This pairing also adds rhinos, so it covers the full Big Five.

Is Samburu better than Masai Mara? Neither is better overall. The Mara is best for big cats and the migration, while Samburu is best for rare species, fewer crowds and a quieter safari.
Which is cheaper, Samburu or Masai Mara? At the same comfort level, Samburu is usually cheaper, mainly because park fees and accommodation costs are lower.
Is Samburu good for first-time visitors? Yes, but most first-timers choose the Mara for its classic scenery and wildlife density. Samburu works well as a second trip or an add-on.
How many days do I need in Samburu? Two to three nights is ideal, which allows several game drives and a good chance of seeing the Special Five.
Can I see the Great Migration in Samburu? No. The Great Migration happens in the Masai Mara, mainly from July to October, and in Tanzania’s Serengeti.
