The best weekend safari getaways from Nairobi are closer, cheaper and easier than most Kenyan residents expect. You can be watching rhinos on Saturday morning after a two-and-a-half-hour drive, or look out at elephants against Kilimanjaro by Saturday afternoon if you leave on Friday. Better still, Kenyan citizens pay far lower park fees than visitors, which makes a short safari a realistic monthly escape instead of a once-a-year splurge. This guide ranks the top options by drive time, shows the 2026 citizen and resident fees, and gives sample plans you can book straight away.
If you want packages with resident pricing already built in, start with our Safari for Residents page. For a ready-made route, look at our 3-day Masai Mara and Lake Naivasha safari, and for budget planning keep our Kenya safari costs guide open in another tab.
Destination | Distance | Drive Time | Best For | Citizen Adult Fee (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Nairobi National Park | About 7 km from the CBD | 30 minutes | Half-day or overnight trip | KES 1,000 |
Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate | About 90 to 100 km | 1.5 to 2 hours | Active families, couples | Varies by activity |
About 160 km | 2.5 to 3 hours | Rhinos, birdlife, short breaks | KES 1,500 | |
About 200 km | 3.5 to 4 hours | Rhinos, chimpanzees, Big Five | About KES 2,000 | |
About 240 km | 4 to 5 hours | Elephants, Kilimanjaro views | KES 1,500 | |
About 225 to 270 km | 5 to 6 hours, or a short flight | Long weekends, big cats | KES 1,500 (Jan to Jun), KES 3,000 (Jul to Dec) |
A simple rule makes the choice easy. If the drive is under three hours, you can leave early on Saturday and still enjoy a full day of wildlife. If it is four hours or more, leave on Friday, ideally before the evening traffic builds, so you arrive in time for a sunset game drive. For anything beyond Amboseli, a long weekend or a short flight works better than a standard Saturday and Sunday.
Think about the people traveling too. Young children handle a two-hour drive far better than a five-hour one, while couples and friends often prefer the bigger parks. Our family safari in Kenya guide explains which parks suit different ages.
Nairobi National Park sits right on the edge of the city, so you can be on a game drive within 30 minutes of leaving home. It holds lions, giraffes, buffalo and a strong rhino population, with the city skyline in the background. Citizens pay KES 1,000 per adult, and a Nairobi package covering the park, the animal orphanage and the Safari Walk costs KES 1,300. It is the perfect easy first step, especially if you only have a Saturday.
Naivasha is the classic Nairobi weekend break. You can take a boat ride among hippos and fish eagles, walk among giraffes and zebras on Crescent Island, and cycle through the gorges of Hell’s Gate. The drive takes about 90 minutes to two hours, so you can arrive for lunch on a Saturday. Hell’s Gate sits in a lower KWS fee tier than the premium parks, so check the current tariff before you go. Read more on our Lake Naivasha destination page.
Lake Nakuru is compact, fenced and packed with wildlife, which makes it ideal for a short stay. It is known for both black and white rhinos, along with lions, leopards and plenty of birdlife. The drive is about two and a half to three hours, and citizens pay KES 1,500 per adult and KES 750 per child. A single full day inside the park is enough to see most of what it offers. Details are on our Lake Nakuru National Park page.
Ol Pejeta, near Nanyuki, is one of the best conservation stops in Kenya. It is home to the last two northern white rhinos, a chimpanzee sanctuary and a wide range of Big Five wildlife. The drive from Nairobi is roughly three and a half to four hours. East African citizens pay about KES 2,000 per adult, though private conservancy fees can change, so confirm on the official Ol Pejeta Conservancy website before you travel. Our Ol Pejeta destination page has more.
Amboseli is famous for its large elephant herds and Kilimanjaro views on clear mornings. It takes four to five hours to reach, so it suits a Friday departure and a Sunday return. Citizens pay KES 1,500 per adult, which is considerably less than the USD 90 charged to non-resident visitors. Plan for early starts, because the mountain is usually clearest at sunrise. See our Amboseli safari page for more detail.
The Mara is possible on a long weekend, and many residents drive down or take a short flight from Wilson Airport. Citizens pay KES 1,500 per adult per day from January to June and KES 3,000 per day from July to December, so travel dates affect your budget. For routes and flight options, see our guide to getting from Nairobi to Masai Mara, and if you want to add a special touch, read about the Masai Mara hot air balloon safari.
Kenya’s national parks charge different rates by visitor category, and many people do not realize there are two local tiers. Kenyan citizens and East African citizens pay the lowest rate. Foreign nationals living in Kenya on a valid permit pay a Kenya resident rate, which is higher than the citizen rate but far below the non-resident tourist fee.
Park | Citizen Adult | Citizen Child | Kenya Resident Adult | Kenya Resident Child |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Amboseli and Lake Nakuru | KES 1,500 | KES 750 | KES 2,025 | KES 1,050 |
Nairobi National Park | KES 1,000 | KES 500 | KES 1,350 | KES 675 |
Nairobi package (park, orphanage, Safari Walk) | KES 1,300 | KES 700 | Check KWS tariff | Check KWS tariff |
Carry your original national ID, passport or alien registration card, because gate staff may ask to see it. KWS parks use cashless payment through eCitizen, so set up your account and pay before you travel. Fees come from the official Kenya Wildlife Service schedule, so always confirm the latest tariff. If you live in Kenya on a foreign passport, contact our team and we will confirm your rate category before you book.
Plan | Friday | Saturday | Sunday |
|---|---|---|---|
Naivasha and Hell’s Gate | Leave after work, check in | Boat ride, Crescent Island walk | Hell’s Gate cycling, drive home |
Rhino weekend at Nakuru | Evening drive to Nakuru | Full-day game drive | Morning drive, return by lunch |
Amboseli long weekend | Leave early, afternoon drive | Sunrise and full-day drives | Morning drive, return |
Lodging is the biggest variable, so ask for resident rates when you book. The park fees are easy to calculate, though. A family of four with two adults and two children pays KES 4,500 for one day at Lake Nakuru or Amboseli (two adults at KES 1,500 plus two children at KES 750), and KES 3,000 at Nairobi National Park. Park tickets cover 24 hours, so a two-night stay can mean paying again for the second day, which is worth asking the gate about.
Add fuel, meals and a guide tip to your plan. Our safari tipping guide for Kenya shows how to budget tips in shillings. For package prices, see our safari tour packages.
You can go any weekend, but timing changes the experience. The green season from March to May is quieter and cheaper, while July to October brings peak wildlife and higher Mara fees. For a month-by-month view, read our guide to the best time to visit Kenya for a safari, and if you are chasing the herds, see the Masai Mara Great Migration river crossings guide.
What is the closest safari to Nairobi? Nairobi National Park is about 30 minutes from the city center, so you can do a game drive in a few hours. Lake Naivasha is about two hours away.
Can I do a safari in just one weekend? Yes. Nairobi National Park, Naivasha, Lake Nakuru and Ol Pejeta all work well for a Saturday and Sunday, while Amboseli and the Mara are better with a Friday departure.
How much do Kenyan citizens pay for park entry in 2026? Citizen adults pay KES 1,500 at Amboseli and Lake Nakuru, KES 1,000 at Nairobi National Park, and KES 1,500 or KES 3,000 per day at the Mara depending on the season.
Do foreign residents get the same rate as citizens? No. Foreign nationals living in Kenya pay a separate resident rate, such as KES 2,025 at Amboseli and Lake Nakuru, which is higher than the citizen rate.
What should I carry to qualify for local rates? Bring your original national ID, passport or alien registration card. Pay online through eCitizen where possible.
